A true Scottish classic, our macaroon bars are made the traditional way and finished with a generous toasted coconut coating. Sweet, soft and unmistakably Scottish, they're one of the most-loved treats in the Mrs Tilly's range — a proper taste of home whether you grew up with them or are trying a Scottish macaroon bar for the first time.

We've been making sweet memories in Scotland since 1997, and our macaroon bars are a firm favourite for a reason: simple, nostalgic and made to a recipe that's stood the test of time.

Why you'll love them:

  • A traditional Scottish macaroon bar with a soft centre and toasted coconut coating
  • Made in Scotland by Mrs Tilly's since 1997
  • Perfect on its own, with a cuppa, or boxed up as a gift
  • Sent across the UK with fast, carefully packed delivery

Stock up on a single bar or add a few to your basket alongside our Scottish tablet and fudge for the full Mrs Tilly's selection.

How to Enjoy a Mrs Tilly's Macaroon Bar

They're built for portability, which is half the point. A macaroon bar slips into a lunchbox, a handbag or a jacket pocket without any fuss. The wrapper keeps things clean, the fondant keeps its shape at room temperature, and unlike chocolate the coconut coating doesn't smear the moment things warm up. Handy for a proper five-minute pause in the middle of a working afternoon.

For pairing, they sit well alongside strong coffee — the bitterness cuts the sweetness of the fondant and lets the dark chocolate come through. Also lovely with a proper builder's tea, or a small glass of cold milk if you're going full 1950s about it. For a more grown-up pairing, a wee dram of Speyside whisky brings out the chocolate note nicely.

The case of 16 is the format we send out to weddings, offices, party bags and care packages — individually wrapped means each guest gets a proper single-serve treat with no plating required.

FAQ

What is a Scottish macaroon bar?

A Scottish macaroon bar is a confection unique to Scotland. It's made from a soft fondant centre, coated in dark chocolate, then rolled in desiccated coconut. It is not the same as the small coconut "macaroon" biscuits found elsewhere in the UK, and it has no relation to the French macaron. The original Scottish version dates back to the early 1900s.

Is Mrs Tilly's Scottish macaroon bar gluten-free?

Yes. All ingredients in our macaroon bars are naturally gluten-free, and the packaging carries the Gluten-Free certification. The allergens to be aware of are milk and soya (in the dark chocolate emulsifier).

Does the macaroon bar contain nuts?

Our macaroon bars do not contain tree nuts or peanuts. They do contain desiccated coconut — coconut is classified as a drupe rather than a nut, but allergy guidance varies. If you have a coconut or tree-nut allergy, please check with your GP before consuming.

Is the Scottish macaroon bar suitable for vegans?

No. Our macaroon bars contain milk and are not suitable for vegans. They are suitable for vegetarians.

How should I store Mrs Tilly's macaroon bars?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Each bar is individually wrapped, so the case of 16 keeps well in the cupboard for several weeks. Once opened, eat within a few days for the best texture.

Can I order Mrs Tilly's macaroon bars for a wedding or event?

Yes. The case of 16 individually wrapped bars works well for weddings, parties, and bulk gifting. For larger orders or branded packaging, get in touch and we'll quote on a one-off basis.

What's the difference between a Scottish macaroon bar and a French macaron?

They're not related. A French macaron is a small, brightly coloured sandwich biscuit made from almond meringue with a filling — delicate, crisp on the outside, chewy inside. A Scottish macaroon bar is a chunkier, chocolate-coated fondant bar rolled in coconut, invented in Glasgow in the early 1900s. Different countries, different centuries, different sweets. The names just happen to be close.

Are Mrs Tilly's macaroon bars good for gifting?

Yes, especially the case of 16. Individually wrapped means they hold up well in the post, look properly presented on arrival and don't need any packaging fuss at the other end. Popular for weddings, corporate gifts, birthday hampers and care packages sent to students or expats. If you'd like something more bespoke — branded outer boxes, larger volumes — get in touch and we'll quote directly.

I am a Scot who has lived in London for 50 years. I was brought up on these delicious treats. I felt deprived when I moved South as I couldn't just buy one when I felt like it!
Yay for the Internet! Mrs Tillys' Macaroon bars, Tablet and Scottish Fudge are definitely the Best. They are extremely sweet and melt in your mouth but not really suitable for the savoury palate! I adore all three but would recommend that you cut them into small pieces if you have never had them before. Large chunks can be overpowering and a step too far! Definitely recommended for the sweet tooth.

I haven’t had a macaroon bar since
I was a child living in Scotland. That was over sixty years ago. I recently found one In a shop whilst touring the highlands, it was great and just how I remembered it from all those years ago, I tried a few and ordered a dozen to be delivered to my home for when I returned. I’ve already eaten two of them, so I’m going to be careful, but these are of great quality, great taste and wholly magical. If you haven’t had one for a while, go for it you’ll be glad you did. From an exiled Scot
