Scottish Tablet
Scottish tablet is a traditional confectionery with a sweet, crumbly texture and rich caramel flavour — similar to fudge, but firmer and grainier. Traditionally made from sugar, butter and sweetened condensed milk, tablet has been part of Scottish food culture for around 300 years. Mrs Tilly's has been making it by hand in small batches in Scotland since 1997, using our own proper recipe. Every batch is gluten-free and made with no artificial flavourings.
Choose from classic gift boxes in 150g and 400g sizes, our popular Scottish Tablet Bar for an on-the-go treat, Tablet Popcorn for something different, or our limited edition Malt Whisky Tablet. Need a larger amount? Our 1kg bags are perfect for sharing or events.
If you’re looking for another chewy-sweet treat, try our macaroon bars.
What Makes Mrs Tilly's Scottish Tablet Different?
Mrs Tilly's tablet is handmade in small batches using traditional methods and a handful of proper ingredients — sugar, whole milk, salted butter, sweetened condensed milk and glucose syrup — plus patience and skill. It's the same approach we've used since 1997, because the recipe hasn't changed and doesn't need to.
That's why the texture is different. Mrs Tilly's tablet has that proper crumbly, melt-in-the-mouth quality that you remember from growing up, or from your first taste at a Scottish market. It's also naturally gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians.
Scottish Tablet FAQ
What is Scottish tablet?
Scottish tablet is a traditional sweet treat with roots in Scotland going back around 300 years. Traditionally made from sugar, butter and sweetened condensed milk, it has a firm, crumbly texture that dissolves on the tongue — quite different from Scottish fudge, which is softer and chewier. Mrs Tilly's uses the same method with our own proper recipe: sugar, whole milk, salted butter, sweetened condensed milk and glucose syrup — gluten-free and with no artificial flavourings. Tablet is a staple at celebrations, weddings and Burns Night suppers. If you're curious about the differences, we've written about everything you need to know about Scottish tablet on our blog.
How long does Scottish tablet keep?
Stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, Mrs Tilly's tablet stays fresh for several weeks. It can also be frozen to extend its shelf life — just wrap individual pieces or use an airtight container, and thaw at room temperature when you're ready to enjoy them.
Is Scottish tablet gluten-free?
Yes. Mrs Tilly's Scottish tablet is made from ingredients that are naturally free from gluten. We carry the Gluten-Free certification on our packaging. As always, check the label if you have specific dietary requirements.
